摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the optical alignment of high-polymer thin films without rubbing the films by footing the high-polymer thin film contg. azo dyestuffs on the opposite surface of one substrate, forming an alignment layer on the opposite surface of another substance facing this substrate and disposing a liquid crystal layer between the high- polymer thin film and the alignment layer. SOLUTION: The alignment layer 11 consisting of polyimide is formed on an upper substrate 10 of a liquid crystal cell 1 and the alignment layer 21 consisting of a high polymer contg. the azo dyestuffs is formed on a lower substrate 20. Methyl orange inducing optical anisotropy in high-polymer arrangement is used for the dyestuffs of the high-polymer alignment layer 21 contg. the azo dyestuffs and polyvinyl alcohol is used as a matrix. The alignment layer 11 is so aligned as to have a prescribed pretilt angle by a rubbing method before bonding of the upper substrate 10 and the lower substrate 20. The alignment layer 21 formed on the lower substrate 20 is so aligned that the methyl orange molecules have the prescribed pretilt angle by making the circularly polarized pumping wave incident diagonally on the substrate surface.
