PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the optical material superior in transparence and permeability to oxygen and surface wettability and staining resistance and high in reflective index and impact resistance by using a polymer obtained by polymerizing a polymerizable component containing a specified monomer. SOLUTION: The optical material is a polymer obtained by polymerizing the polymerizable component containing the monomer represented by the formula in which R<1> is an H atom or a trimethylsilyl group; R<2> is a 1-5 C alkylene group; R<3> is a -Si(CH3 )n OSi(CH3 )3 }3 group; and (n) is 0, 1, 2, or 3. In the case that R<1> is a trimethylsilyl group, the obtained polymer is formed into a desirable lens shape and then, brought into contact with water or alcohol to convert the protective trimethylsilyl group derived from this monomer into a carboxyl group, thus permitting the function, such as surface wettability, to be later given to the optical material. |
