A method of making a thermoplastic lens (18) by placing a laminated layer/coating (22) having the desired lens characteristics required for the prescription between a preheated lens blank (20) and preheated mold halves (10, 12) and pressing the mold halves (10, 12) toward each other to compress the lens blank (20) and uniformly apply the layer/coating (22) thereon without any creases or cracks therein. The molding cycle is programmed to achieve a predetermined rate of speed of compression and the molds (10, 12) are cooled prior to removing the finished lens (18).
