An environmentally sound apparatus and method for automatically extracting fluids such as lubricating fluids from a target reservoir such as crankcase (154) for a vehicle engine (152), and injecting the proper type and quantity of fresh fluid into the reservoir is disclosed. The apparatus includes one or more sources of lubricating fluid (24, 26), a waste fluid tank (28), a pump (76), and a flow meter (78). A programmed microprocessor (130) produces selected sequences of control signals to govern the flow of fluid among the fluid sources (24, 26), the waste fluid tank (28), and the target reservoir (154) in response to input identification information and signals produced by a flow monitoring pulse meter (78).
