The invention relates to a method and device for machining workpieces with rotationally symmetrical surfaces, e.g. as they are used in crankshafts, reciprocating internal combustion engines, piston compressors etc., to reduce set-up times and non-productive times and to avoid, more specifically, loading the workpiece onto another machine, in addition to enabling large batch sizes and small numbers of pieces to be machined in an economically viable manner. The inventive method is characterised in that the workpieces are machined according to methods whereby the cutting speed is primarily generated by turning the workpiece and by machining methods whereby the cutting speed is primarily obtained by turning the tool.
