Use of 18-38C alkyl hydroxystearoyl-stearate (I) for increasing the solar protection factor (SPF) of cosmetic or dermatological compositions containing conventional UV filters is new. (N.B. The formula given for (I) in the disclosure indicates that it is a 19-39C alkyl 12-(12-hydroxy-stearoyloxy)-stearate).
