Method for determining the type and the position of an installation box, and measurement layout to determine the type of a box, for example, an electrical installation box, and its position. To determine the type and location of concealed installation boxes 22, such as electrical installation boxes, which have a mounting 10 of metal, a signal is emitted with a frequency that coincides with the resonance frequency of the box. The position of the box, where the emitted signal is most attenuated, is an expression of the exact position of the box. The signal is emitted from a measurement layout which contains a probe 14, which has an oscillatory circuit 1, 4, 5 consisting of a parallel connection of a coil 9 and a variable capacitor 5, which can be electrically controlled, for example. As regards correction for deviations in resonance frequency of the same types of boxes, the signal is swept, so that one can establish the coincidence between the frequency of the signal emitted by the probe and the resonance frequency of the box. The type of boxes can also be determined by sweeping the signal in a larger interval, such as from 0.1 GHz to 4 GHz. The installation box can be provided with a resonance circuit, e.g., in the form of a conducting ring or a conductive paint. The installation box and the resonance frequency can possibly be configured as separate parts. <IMAGE>
