Process for producing a purified primary fatty acid amide from a crude fatty acid comprises: (a) stabilising the crude fatty acid by adding a reducing agent; (b) reacting the fatty acid with gaseous ammonia; (c) stabilising the resulting crude amide with a reducing agent; (d) adjusting to pH /- 7; and (e) purifying the product by two-stage distillation.
