A constructional element consists of an open-porous body of metallic reinforcing elements with pores infiltrated by magnesium in metallic, intermetallic compound, or alloy form. A constructional element consists of an open-porous body comprising metallic reinforcing elements, the pores of which are infiltrated by a matrix of magnesium in metallic, intermetallic compound, or alloy form. Independent claims are also included for (i) production of a constructional element by infiltrating molten magnesium metal, intermetallic compound or alloy into an open-porous body of metallic reinforcing elements in a casting mold; (ii) a constructional element produced by the above process; and (iii) a component comprising the above constructional element.
