Axially spaced (d) stop grooves (9) on the drill cutting shaft (3) are engaged by a plastics ring (10) to show the depth marks. The ring, possibly made of metal also is transversely slotted and the shaft itself has lateral cutters (4) and clamping grooves (5) parallel to the shaft axis (8). These cutters are formed by two axi-parallel ribs (15) having bearing surfaces (16) parallel to the shaft axis (3), the cutters spiralling towards the drill tip (7). The spirals form half-turns over one third of the shaft length.
