A process for the production of acrylic acid comprises the azeotropic dehydration of an acrylic acid containing aqueous solution obtained by catalytic vapor phase oxidation of propylene and/or acrolein, in order to separate the acrylic acid. The acrylic acid containing aqueous solution is evaporated before the azeotropic dehydration and the resulting vapor is azeotropically dehydrated.
