The trough (2) has a reservoir (5) and a cover (6). Water is fed into the trough from a pipe (3) via a float valve (4). The aperture in the cover (6) is normally blocked by a floating disk (7). The disk is made from heat insulating plastic and has an elliptical cross section.. Except when the animal is drinking, the trough is sealed to retain heat and exclude foreign bodies.
