The device has a pulse wheel (P) with a number of pole pairs, a sensor (S) and a controller (ST) for evaluating the sensor signals. The pulse wheel is designed for a duty cycle increasing from pole pair to pole pair in one rotation direction. The rotation direction is determined from the increasing or decreasing duty cycle.
