PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel polynucleotide that has high identity to a nucleic acid encoding a glucokinase polypeptide containing a specific amino acid sequence, and is useful for searching antibacterial compounds and for treatment and diagnosis of bacterial infections with Streptococci. SOLUTION: This is a polynucleotide having at least 70% identity to the polynucleotide encoding the polypeptide containing the amino acid sequence of the formula. This is a novel isolated polynucleotide containing the polynucleotide sequence comprising at least 70% identity to the polynucleotide encoding the same mature polypeptide as that expressed by the glucose kinase gene included in Streptococcus pneumoniae deposited strain and is useful for screening of antibacterial compounds and for treatment and diagnosis of infections of Streptococcus pneumoniae. This polypeptide is obtained by probing the chromosomal DNA library of Streptococcus pneumoniae 0100993 with the marker gene originating from its partial sequence.
