PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for the production of a purified liquid crystal to realize a simple matrix liquid crystal display element or an active matrix liquid crystal display element having excellent display quality and display reliability and, at the same time, capable of suppressing the thermal decomposition of the liquid crystal in the liquid crystal panel manufacturing process. SOLUTION: This process for the production of a purified liquid crystal comprises the 1st step of dissolving an antiferroelectric liquid crystal or a ferrielectric liquid crystal raw material in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, the 2nd step of bringing the liquid crystal solution into contact with one or more kinds of adsorbents selected from zeolite, alumina and silica gel and separating the adsorbent from the liquid crystal solution, the 3rd step of performing the precision filtration of the obtained liquid crystal solution and the 4th step of removing the solvent from the obtained filtrate. The purified liquid crystal produced by this process has a specific resistance of >=5×10<12>Ω.cm and a thermal decomposition rate of <=0.3 wt.%, especially <=0.1 wt.% (analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography after leaving in air at 120 deg.C for 24 hr).
