PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an exchange membrane contg. fine catalyst particles in both porous faces and to improve current efficiency by joining thin films formed from a slurry contg. fine catalyst particles, an ion exchange resin soln. and acid-soluble metal particles to both faces of a polymer ion exchange membrane and carrying out acid washing and plating. SOLUTION: Fine catalyst particles contg. a metal of the platinum group, etc., and particles of an acid-soluble metal such as iron are mixed with a cation exchange resin soln. and a solvent is added to prepare a slurry. This slurry is thinly spread on a smooth surface and the solvent is removed to form a thin film. Such thin films are disposed on both faces of a polymer ion exchange membrane and they are joined together by heating and pressing. The metal particles existing in the thin films are dissolved by acid washing and the remaining acid on the porous faces is removed by washing with pure water. A growth process is then carried out. Since the resultant films are handled in the same way as the conventional films, the process is carried out without alteration. Films in which fine catalyst particles do not exist at all are obtd. and the films have no electronic conductivity in the growth process. |
