PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain the subject high purity compound without using mercury at all by reacting isovanillin with ammonia in the presence of an alkali hydroxide. SOLUTION: This compound is obtained by reacting (A) isovanillin with (B) ammonia in the presence of (C) an alkali hydroxide (e.g. sodium hydroxide) and, if necessary, (D) a reducting catalyst (e.g. Raney nickel), preferably in a solvent (e.g. water) and preferably at 30-45 deg.C more preferably 35-40 deg.C. The component B is preferably used at 3-6 mol more preferably 4.5-5.5 mol based on one mol component A. The component C is preferably used at 0.5-1.2 mol based on one mol component A. The component D is preferably used at 10-40 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. component A. Alernatively, the component A and the component B may be subjected to catalytic reduction with hydrogen. |
