PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-strength carbon material easy to judge end point in heat kneading operation, sparlingly causing crack initiation or the like in calcining and not requiring such a process as impregnating pitch, by sufficiently heat kneading aggregate and a binder and then adding coal tar to the mixture, followed by heat kneading again and then by grinding, molding, calcining and graphitizing the resultant composition. SOLUTION: This carbon material comprises (A) calcined pitch coke powder, graphite powder, carbon black or the like as aggregate and (B) tar pitch, coal tar or the like as a binder. The weight ratio of the aggregate to the binder is preferably (50:50)-(70:30). The average particle diameter of the aggregate is preferably 30 μm or smaller. It is preferable to heat knead the aggregate and the binder at 180-300 deg.C and to blend the kneaded product with coal tar in the ratio of 100 pts.wt. to (5-15) pts.wt. The second heat kneading is conducted at the similar temperature to the first heat kneading. |
