Waveguide profile for large effective area

Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber having a segmented core design. The core may have two or more segments. The highest refractive index portion of the core is spaced apart from the centerline of the waveguide fiber. The relative index of the first or center segment of the core is negative, where the reference refractive index is taken to be the minimum index clad. This family of core profiles provides effective areas in the range of 110 mum2 to 150 mum2 in the operating window around 1550 nm.
