Class 98(2) A layer of a solution or emulsion of cellulose acetate of acetyl content 25 to 40 per cent calculated as acetic acid is coated on to a flexible support, particularly a support of hydrophobic material or a support having a hydrophobic surface produced as by lacquering paper, baryta paper or natural tracing paper to form a coating of cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate of higher acetyl content, colopheny or polyvinyl alcohol, dried, and a solution of a light-sensitive diazo compound which may contain a coupler is coated on top and dried. Exposure and development are by normal methods, the material being particularly useful for semi-wet development. In Examples (1) tracing paper is dipped into a solution of colophony in methanol and dried, a 38 per cent acetyl cellulose acetate solution in a water-dioxane mixture at 30‹C. is cast thereon and dried in air at 50‹C., the cellulose acetate layer is impregnated with a solution of p - diazo - phenyl - N - morpholine-stannic chloride double salt, citric acid and resorcinol in aqueous ethanol and dried; the material is exposed under a line tracing to a mercury vapour lamp and developed in ammonia fumes to give a red-brown picture. (II) baryta coated paper is rendered hydrophobic by means of a solution of polyvinyl acetate in methanol, coated with a 34 per cent acetyl cellulose acetate in aqueous ethanol sensitized with a solution of the zinc chloride double salt of 1-diazo- 2-ethoxy-4-diethylamino-benzene, 1-phenyl-2:3-dimethyl-5-pyrazolone, phloroglucinol, resorcinol and citric acid in aqueous ethanol, exposed and developed in ammonia fumes to give a bluish-black image. (III) a cellulose nitrate lacquered tracing paper is coated with 28 per cent acetyl cellulose acetate sensitized with the zinc chloride double salt of p-diazo-o-chlorodiethyl-aniline, exposed and surface developed with couplers in the developer. (IV) cellulose acetate lacquered paper is sensitized with the zinc chloride double salt of p-diazoethylbenzyl aniline, exposed and surface-developed as in Example III. (V) celluloid is coated with 30 per cent acetyl cellulose acetate using aqueous propanol as solvent, sensitized as in Example IV, exposed under a diapositive having soft graduations and surface developed by application of a solution in water of thiourea, borax, phloroglucinol, resorcinol, sodium carbonate and the sodium salt of isopropylnaphthalene sulphonic acid to give a black diapositive. (VI) cellulose acetate lacquered paper is provided with a 30 per cent acetyl cellulose acetate coating, sensitized with the zinc chloride double salt of p-diazo-2: 5-diethoxybenzoyl aniline, exposed and surface developed with couplers in the developer.
