PURPOSE:To produce a magnesium alloy for sacrificial anode suitable for electric protection of iron and steel structures by preparing an Mg alloy containing specific percentages of Al, Zn, and Mn and selectively containing specific amounts of Y, La, Ce, Pr, and Nd. CONSTITUTION:A magnesium alloy having a composition consisting of, by weight, 5-12% Al, 0.5-5% Zn, 0.1-1% Mn, 0.005-0.5% of at least one element selected from the group consisting of Y, La, Ce, Pr, and Nd, and the balance magnesium with inevitable impurities is prepared. By this method, a sacrificial anode in which efficiency of the alloy is increased from conventional about 50-55% to about 65% as to have about 1450-1480A.hr/kg quantity of generated electricity while having sufficiently base anode potential in the case where this sacrificial anode is used for electric protection for iron and steel structures installed in or on the ground and which can be used stably over a long period and has extremely long service life can be obtained. |
