The present invention provides a practical and highly scalable mechanism for conducting multiple-request transactions in a stateless environment, such as the web. A transaction manager is used to coordinate the overall transaction process. The transaction manager coordinates the process in such a way that state information is maintained for a transaction without requiring the transaction manager itself to persistently maintain the state information.
