The invention relates to a method for producing ester plasticizers by reacting di- or polycarboxylic acids or their anhydrides with alcohols in the presence of a catalyst containing titanium, zirconium or tin. The invention is characterized in that a mixture of acid or acid anhydride and alcohol is initially reacted at 100-160 DEG C and the water thus formed is optionally removed; a catalyst is added to the reaction which is completed by increasing the temperature to approximately 250 DEG C; the reaction mixture is neutralized with an aqueous alkaline or alkaline-earth hydroxide solution; the excess alcohol is separated and the remaining raw ester is dried and filtered.
