The electric appts. esp. a lightning or surge voltage protector (3) has an insulated material housing (8), acted on with high voltage, and is provided with a system for the optical indication of a faulty condition, caused by a fault current. The indicating system is designed as at least one part of the outer surface of the insulated housing (8) contg. data tape (9). Which with heating up to a limit temp., which lies above a permitted operating temp. of the appts. transmits an optically detectable signal. The limit temp. lies between 159 and 500 deg.C. The data carrier (9) is provided at a part of the outer surface of the housing (8), exposed to the increasing temp. effect of the fault current.
