Synthetic ceramides of formula (I) having a beneficial action on skin and hair. Ceramides of formula (I) R<1> = 9 - 23C (preferably 11 - 19C) saturated or unsaturated alkyl, which may be hydroxylated; R<2> = H or 1-8C saturated or unsaturated alkyl; R<3> = 1 - 32C (preferably 4 - 18C) saturated or unsaturated alkyl, optionally hydroxylated, this hydroxy being optionally substituted by 1 - 24C saturated or unsaturated acyl, and the group R<3> being optionally interrupted by 1 - 7 hetero atoms .
