The nailer has a piston (7) with a retracting lever (10) which can be drawn back into a release setting out of the axial projection of the piston entraining face (74). The swivel axis (86) of the retracting lever is carried on a guide cylinder (8) and the retracting lever is engaged by a spring-powered slide (9) parallel to the nailing directions. The retracting lever may be carried on a bearer arm which can be offset relative to the cylinder in a plane parallel to the nailing direction. The swivel movement of the retracting lever is limited by one or more dampers mounted on the bearer arm.
