Oral administration of bacteria at a concentration which produces cell-mediated immunity and weight in certain animals

Propionibacterium acnes, Propionibacterium avidum, Propionibacterium lymphophilum, Propionibacterium granulosum, Corynebacterium parvum, and Arachnia propionica are effective in enhancing cell-mediated immunity when administered orally. These bacteria are capable of enhancing weight gain as well. The disclosed compositions and methods have been shown to work in pigs. They are expected to be effective in livestock, pets, and humans. The bacteria may be live, attenuated or killed. In addition, extracts or subunits may be used. The bacteria may be administered alone, or with food, water, or medications. Because the bacterial composition is stable under processing conditions, incorporation into commercially-available feed compositions is useful for administration to animals. Mixtures of the listed bacterial species are predicted to elicit the same results as a single species.
