Sensors (20) fitted to each seat (14) monitor the size/weight of the occupant and sensors (22) the position the occupant assumes on occurrence of a collision. When inflation of the air bag is required, as called for by signals from a front impact sensor (26) and a passenger compartment acceleration sensor (29), the first two sensors determine the degree of inflation and deflation matching the size/weight and position of the occupant.
