The method involves at least two sensors (10-13) emitting sound waves, detecting the sound waves reflected from an obstruction (1') and determining the distance to the obstruction from the time difference between emission and detection. The sensors operate at the same transmission frequency, have identical startup properties and are phase correlated. They are arranged so that their radiation lobes at least partially overlap.
