ION EXCHANGE RESIN AND PRODUCTION OF BISPHENOLS USING THE SAME RESIN

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a modified strongly acidic sulfonic acid type ion exchange resin which is a catalyst suitable for production of bisphenols by reaction of phenols with ketones by binding a specific mercaptoamine compound to a specific resin through an ion. SOLUTION: (B) A mercaptoamine compound of the formula [R is H, a 1-4C alkyl, a 5-10C cycloalkyl or a 6-15C aryl; (a) and (b) are each 1-3] in an amount of 2-30 mol.% based on total sulfonic acid group of the component A is bound to (A) a strongly acidic sulfonic acid type ion exchange resin through an ion to provide the objective resin. The component B is an N- mercaptoalkylaniline (derivative) having mercaptoalkyl group represented by the formula. A resin having a skeleton comprising a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer and a sulfonic acid group bonded thereto is preferably used as the component A.
