PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a notched feeling of a color character and line drawing and to improve an image quality by detecting an area where smoothing processing is performed and performing smoothing processing of multivalued image data contained in the area in each color component. SOLUTION: A density luminance converting part 102 converts image signals Y, M, C and K from an external device 101 into luminance signals R, G and B and supplies them to an image area separating part 107. An edge detecting part 108, a saturation deciding part 109 and a thickness discriminating part 110 generate an edge signal edge, a saturation signal col and a thickness signal zone respectively and input them to a Laplacian filter LUT 111, and it generates a sen signal that changes printer resolution only to edge parts of the thinnest characters and supplies it to a smoothing circuit 104. The circuit 104 performs smoothing processing of areas of the thinnest edge part based on a result that is undergone image area separation after binarizing the signals C, M, Y and K in each color component and performing pattern matching. |
