PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain improvement of operation convenience in a radio communication unit in which an incoming call melody is made to ring at the time of arrival of the call. SOLUTION: A control circuit 9 converts a communication data signal to a sound data signal and makes a sounder 8 ring it as a melody when the communication data signal transmitted from a base station is an incoming melody signal, and a nonvolatile RAM 13 is made to store the data signal when a key operation for registration is performed. After hearing and confirming the sound data signal as a melody, a user can register it as an incoming melody if the melody suits his taste and, if otherwise, he can reject registration. Thus, it does not happen at all that, when a call comes into a portable telephone set 1, a melody which does not suit one's own taste rings or a favorite melody which one does not want to be deleted is deleted.
