The assembly (1) fills a line of empty containers (2) with a pourable liquid substance, as they pass along a conveyer belt. The onward motion of the containers is temporarily halted by a stop-assembly and associated control unit during the filling process. The filling machine (3) has two parallel rows (4,5) of filling lines, each with its own discrete conveyer belt (9,10) and stop-assembly (25,26). The assembly lines are operated alternately, so that while one line is being filled, the other line of previously-filled containers is replaced by empty containers.
