The water header partition plate of a tube-and-plate heat exchanger is inspected using television camera images, from which distances between tube plate datum lines and partition plate edge points are measured by comparison with a gauge length on the tube plate. A process for inspecting the shape of a partition plate which divides the hemispherical water header (3) of a tube-and-plate heat exchanger (1) into two compartments, each equipped with an exchange liquid pipe (4, 5) and an inspection hole, comprises (a) introducing a television camera successively through the inspection hole of each compartment to obtain an image of a first junction zone between the partition plate and the tube plate; (b) measuring the distance between a first datum line of the tube plate and a first point on the edge of the partition plate by comparing a distance measured on the image with a gauge length on the tube plate; (c) obtaining supplementary images in second and third junction zones between the partition plate and the tube plate which are spaced from one another and from the first junction zone in a direction parallel to the partition plate edge; (d) measuring the respective distances between second and third datum lines of the tube plate and second and third points on the edge of the partition plate; and (e) determining the shape of the partition plate from the distance measurements. An Independent claim is also included for equipment for carrying out the above inspection method.
