The present invention is a novel therapeutic use of gabapentin of general formula (I), wherein R1 is H, or lower alcyl and n is integral number from 4 to 6, and also their pharmaceutically acceptable salts. The compounds are useful in the treatment of mania and the preventative treatment of bipolar disorder.
