The torch (10) for a compact welding unit (1) is supplied with welding gas through a hose (12) and a connection (11) at the unit. This connection which is electrically insulated from the housing of the unit is used as a contact for a control signal line (13) from the torch to an electric circuit (3) inside the housing.
