<p>An automated injection module (10) is comprised of a housing (12), a piston drug capsule (18) disposed within the housing (12), a piston core (20) including a puncture seal membrane (21) defining a reservoir for holding a drug between the puncture seal membrane (21) and the piston drug capsule (18), an injection device (22) having at least one sharp end for puncturing the puncture seal (21) upon activation of the device, an end cap (24) on a distal end of the housing, and a pressure source on a proximal end of the housing. The pressure source is preferably a propellant that ignites, and forces the piston (16) toward the distal end. Substantially simultaneously, the injection device pierces the puncture seal membrane (21), the piston core (20) is forced into the piston drug capsule (18), the drug is evacuated from the reservoir through the injection device (22), and into a patient.</p> |
