A nematic liquid crystal mixture comprises (1) 20-90 wt.% of component (A) containing compound(s) of dielectric anisotropy >+1.5; (2) 10-80 wt.% of component (B) containing compound(s) of anisotropy between -1.5 and +1.5; (3) 0-20 wt.% of component (D) containing compound(s) of anisotropy -1.5; and optionally (4) optically active component (C). The ratio between the layer thickness (separation of the outer plates) and the natural pitch of the chiral nematic liquid crystal mixture is 0.2 to 1.3. Component (A) comprises compound(s) of formula (IA) and component (B) comprises compound(s) of formula (IB), where R = 1-12C alkyl, alkoxy or alkenyl in which non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by -O-, -CH=CH-, -CO-, -OCO- or -COO-; R3 = 2-7C alkenyl; R4 = as R or R3; and c = 0 or 1. Also claimed is a supertwist liquid crystal display.
