A carbonaceous block for a positive electrode, which is inexpensive yet exhibiting a long life and excellent electrode characteristics, and an electrode using the carbonaceous block. The isotropic carbonaceous block is used as a positive electrode in an electrolytic bath which comprises a hydrogen fluoride-containing molten salt for generating fluorine, and has a bulk density of less than 1.6 g/cm<3>, a bending strength of more than 200 kgf/cm<2>, an average porous radius of more than 0.5 mu m, a cumulative porous volume of more than 80 mm<3>/g, and a gas permeability of more than 0.1 cm<2>/s.
