The instrument consists of a first leg and a second which is attached pivotally to the first. When the second pivoting leg (12) is fully open, a slot (42) is inclined against the direction of movement of the slider so that a cross pin (38) which couples the handle to the slider allows the slider (22) to move into its retracted position. A releasable lock (48) can restrict the pivoting movement of the handle or the displacement of the slider so that the handle cannot be pivoted to the maximum open position.
