The sensor has an ion conducting electrolyte layer with an anode and a cathode formed on it. Overlaying both the electrodes and the electrolyte there are layers which block the diffusion of gas in a controlled way. Both the electrolyte layer and the blocking layers are formed from the same material that contains stabilized ZrO2 and an inorganic material. The ZrO2 may be stabilized with Y2O3, MgO or CaO. The inorganic material may be Al2O3, or one of the stabilized ZrO2 previously mentioned. The inorganic material has a larger particle size than the stabilized ZrO2 and is present in the electrolyte layer and the blocking layer at from 10 to 40 wt.%. The area of cathode is greater than the area of anode. The gas diffusion blocking layer over the anode is thicker than that over the cathode.
