A colour organic layer is selectively transferred from a donor layer onto a pixel array, each pixel having colour subpixels by: forming a transparent, heat insulating layer (13) over a substrate (10); adding a light absorbing layer (15); providing the substrate with an array of openings (14) from the reverse surface to the heat insulating layer corresponding to the subpixels (32); forming the organic donor layer (16) on the light absorbing layer; positioning the device in contact with or close to the donor layer with the openings (14) and the subpixels (32) arranged in correspondence; and heating by irradiation (40) to cause the selective transfer of portions of the organic donor layer to the subpixels.
