The method provides control of an electricity meter which can be used with a module which cooperates via a bidirectional optical transmitter with the basic counter mechanism in the meter. The bidirectional optical transmission link can be effected to identify the type of attached module. In the case where no module is attached or where an empty or dummy module is used, the optical transmission beam is reflected into the optical receiver of the electricity meter by an reflection device arranged in the transmission path. In the case of a passive module without individual processor control the transmission beam of the electricity meter is modified via an optical receiver to a transmission beam sent from the optical transmitter of the module. In the case of an active module with built in processor control, the transmission beam starts a processor programme etc. which modulates a transmission beam of the module.
