The output of an X-ray tube (40) is directed onto an individual (10) and the transmission passes to a converter (50) and the to a CCD camera (52). The camera output is relayed to an image processor (60) to produce screen images (90). A real time histogram is produced of the signal amplitude and this is used to provide input to the X ray dosage regulator (68).
