An article comprises: (a) a substrate having at least one surface; (b) an interior water-absorptive coating on the surface wherein the interior waterabsorptive coating comprises hydrophilic organic polymer which is substantially free from crosslinks derived from ethylenic unsaturation or which contains few crosslinks derived from ethylenic unsaturation; and (c) an exterior water-absorptive coating on the interior water-absorptive coating wherein the exterior water-absorptive coating comprises hydrophilic organic polymer which contains numerous crosslinks derived from ethylenic unsaturation; wherein: (d) the interior coating, the exterior coating, or each of the interior coating and the exterior coating further comprises discrete particles having a number average particle size in the range of from 1 to 500 nanometers.
