The system measures the distance to the vehicle in front, and the speed of the vehicle, and it is determined if the vehicle is following the vehicle in front. A control unit performs feedback control of the measured distance between the vehicles and outputs a target value for the vehicle speed. The control gain in the feedback control is modified based on the measured distance between the vehicles and the result of the determination as to whether the vehicle is following the vehicle in front.
