The inventive method for transmitting useful information and signalling information in a mobile communications system is based on the fact that the useful information transmitted by the base station is transmitted with greater directional selectivity than the signalling information. According to the invention, the useful information and signalling information are error protection coded at the transmission end in order to balance out the different antenna gain, the error protection coding for the signalling information providing better protection than the error protection coding for the useful information.
