Alkaline wash solutions for use in the food and drink industry contain 0.0001-1 wt.% formaldehyde or an equivalent amount of a formaldehyde-releasing compound and 0.0001-1 wt.% of an amine. Alkaline wash solutions for use in the food and drink industry contain 0.0001-1 wt.% formaldehyde or an equivalent amount of a formaldehyde-releasing compound and 0.0001-1 wt.% of an amine of formula R<1>NR<2>R<3> (I), where R<1>-R<3> = H, benzyl, 1-22C alkyl, or 1-10C alkyl mono- or polysubstituted by amino and/or imino groups, or two of R<1>-R<3> can be linked to form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring. An Independent claim is also included for a concentrate for preparing such a solution, comprising 5-25 wt.% formaldehyde or an equivalent amount of a formaldehyde-releasing compound and 1-40 wt.% (I), the balance being solvent and optional additives.
