A metallocene having ferrocenyl substituted bridges is useful for the production of olefin polymers of high molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution. A metallocene (I) of formula (1) is new. M = Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta or a lanthanide element; X1, X2 = 1-10C alkyl, alkoxy, 6-10C aryl, aryloxy, 2-10C alkenyl, 7-20C arylalkyl or alkylaryl, 8-20C aralkenyl, H or halogen; L1, L2 = a mono- or multinuclear hydrocarbon group, optionally substituted and containing a cyclopentadienyl unit which can form a sandwich with M, L2 may additionally be an amido, phosphido- or arsenido group E-D; D = nitrogen, phosphorous or arsenic; E = X1, X2; R = carbon, silicon, germanium or tin; A, B = a ferrocenyl substituted group of formula (i), B may additionally = X1, X2; and R<1> = 1-10C alkyl, 6-10C aryl, 2-10C alkenyl, 7-20C arylalkyl or alkylaryl, 8-20C arylalkenyl. Independent claims are included for (i) preparation of (I) by reaction of a compound of formula (2) with a compound of formula (3); (ii) preparation of polyolefins by polymerisation of olefins in the presence of (I). M<1> = alkali metal; and X<1> = halogen.
