Nucleic acid molecules encoding cysteine-containing or methionine-containing peptides that function to stimulate or suppress the immune response in a mammal are disclosed. Typically, these peptides contain no more than 30 amino acid residues and are linked to a protein targeting sequence at their amino terminal ends.
